Essential Question: What is the value of light and dark?
During our artistic exploration of the Chiaroscuro style, each artist was challenged by the impermanence and seemingly limited color scheme. However, as each artist drew and redrew using the constraints existent in the chiaroscuro style: charcoal powder, putty eraser, soft charcoal pencil, hard charcoal pencil, white pencil and blender, each piece began to come to life in a way no other style could produce. Because we were limited to black and white, the subtleties of shading, value and contrast were of utmost importance. The way in which the light hit the subject was what made the piece come to life. The simplicity of black and white soon turned into the complexity of dark and light. The process of defining everything by it’s value created pieces that had more depth than color could provide. This style, challenging as it may be, is a style that urges the artist to examine every piece of their subject and draw it with honesty.
